The Type 38 rifle was produced in several locations, including Tokyo, Kokura, Nagoya, Jinsen, and Hoten arsenals. The serial numbers of the rifles were assigned by each arsenal in different series, which were not always made in order. The serial number consisted of a series mark (a Japanese character or a number) followed by a four or five digit number.

The following table shows the approximate production dates and ranges of serial numbers for each series and arsenal of the Type 38 rifle.
